Whether you’re a cyclist, walker, a dog walker, a runner, or just enjoying the view, please take more care when you’re using shared spaces such as on the Victoria Avenue Promenade or Railway Walk. These are shared spaces, areas of road where it’s basically every bike, car, or pedestrian for themselves much as roads worked hundreds of years ago. Equally, cyclists have a responsibility to ride carefully and mindfully of pedestrians and other cyclists. Now, with so many converts to cycling on these areas as well as the main roads, the Panel are keen to remind everyone who uses these areas, of the importance of using them correctly and carefully.Īlong much of the area is a cycle path that is trying to segregate pedestrian and cyclists, unfortunately many pedestrians wander into these areas and are causing issues for cyclists. Shared space is a widespread, yet controversial approach to street and public space design, which has attracted a great deal of attentionduring the last decade among urban designers and those interested in improving the built environment through rebalancing the conventional transportation modal share and enhancing the pedestrian mobility. Since 2011, new shared spaces have opened on Darby Street, Lorne Street (outside the Auckland Library), Fort Street, Jean Batten Place, Fort Lane and Totara. She didn’t believe that the cyclist was at fault, but did show how easily these things can happen if we are not taking care and paying proper attention in these areas Fran suffered significant injuries as a result of the incident. She was involved in a collision with a cyclist on the shared space next to Victoria Avenue. In 2018 the Panel launched their shared space campaign that featured a short film (see below) surrounding a collision involving a local woman, Fran Rayner. ![]() There has been a significant increase in the numbers of people who have taken up cycling over the past few months and riding on the shared space areas on traditional bikes as well as a surge of interest in electric bikes.
